So, in case you didn’t know….
I
Books
I’ve always loved to read. When I was a kid, my best friend and I raced to see who could read the most Newbery Honor books. As an “adult” I started collecting my favorites and had a goal to own all the Newbery Honor Books there were. I was well on my way…. I remembered what it was like to go to my Grandma’s house and to sit for hours reading the amazing books that covered her shelves. I wanted my kids and my grandkids to have the same experience at my house!….but I didn’t have a house….just a small apartment and no place to keep a million books.
Even after marrying Ryan I thinned my collection to my most favoritist books ever and had to let the rest go….I was heartbroken. BUT, I have since come to realize the wonders of the Public Library and it’s online catalog and have kept my house full of amazing stories ever since!
So, now….what to read? I’ve joined Goodreads and have had a lot of fun seeing what everyone else I know is reading and getting new ideas of what I might like. But I’ve run into a problem….see, I long for something more than a children’s or young adult read but LOATH the fact that EVERY “grownup” book I’ve picked up is packed full of Adult themes. Sometimes it’s only one or two bad words or an innuendo but I HATE IT!! It ruins the whole thing for me and I find myself back reading kid’s books again. Not that the kid books are bad, most are amazing but I’m tired of reading a story from the point of view of a child….sigh.
See the picture above? I finished both books last week. I LOVE the story behind Fablehaven but am tired of reading through the mind of a 10 year old boy (I have one of those at home and he already makes me tired….) but, although the story behind The Help was amazing and the limited cussing was typical for the period and lifestyles of the characters, it was enough of a distraction for me that I wouldn’t read it again or recommend it. And it’s so sad because it could have been one of my favorite books….(I’ll always wonder how Mae Mobley turned out….)
I could go back to just reading LDS books and LDS authors but I was hoping to find some other good stories out there.
So, are there any??
If you know of any grown up books with NO FOUL LANGUAGE and NO ADULT MOMENTS, I’d REALLY love to know…. Until then, it’s back to church stuff.

first - i just read your comment on my blog and OF COURSE you're in, silly. you're a real friend. i'm just lazy and won't get around to inviting people till next week.
second - dead authors. the morals and standards from days of yore were more impressive than our own, so those are typically safe.
Stephenie Meyer wrote an adult novel that has nothing to do with the Twilight series entitled "The Host." It's a very interesting science fiction novel about the world having been conquered by an alien race. It took me a while to get into it, because the point-of-view from which it is told is unusual, but I couldn't put it down once I did. Since she's LDS, there's very little trash in it.
I COMPLETELY agree!! And yet I have only been able to find a few books to add to my collection. I personally think they should do a rating system for books like they do for movies. I mean really, why not? The same people who watch those movies are the same people who would appreciate those books, right?
A book you might want to check out is "Remembering Isaac", it's a new one that I've read that I loved! It's followed by "Discovering Isaac" and the author is currently writing the third and final book. I enjoyed it, you may too!!
I can second The Host. Loved it! She advertised it as sci-fi for those who don't like sci-fi. :)
Also, I don't know if you're opposed to "adult moments" because you keep finding graphic ones? Or simply because they're "adult moments"? I recently read and LOVED These Is My Words. There is talk of adult things, they're married. But it's so tastefully done. There's a second book too - Sarah's Quilt.
I'll keep thinking and get back to you with more. I have more. Many more. :D But I never update GoodReads...oops.
LOVE The Host. Also The Hunger Games, which is very clean, though I can't vouch 100% for its not having a single cuss word....pretty sure there's one or two? When you're ready for junior lit again, try Gregor the Overlander (a series) and The Mysterious Benedict Society (also a series). And I love Barbara Kingsolver (author).
CLASSICS and I can suggest more than a few if you want to give me a call. And I LOVED Orson Scott Card's women of Israel series. I could just tell you titles off my bookshelves if you're interested.
